What feel sounds like
Ask a golfer to describe a putter's feel and you'll get words like soft, firm, dead, hot, clicky. Ask them to describe it with earplugs in and something interesting happens: the vocabulary shifts. That's suggestive that some of what the hands supposedly feel, the ears are also reporting — though we haven't run that comparison ourselves yet.
The physics is suggestive here. Contact between ball and face is understood to last on the order of half a millisecond — brief enough that the hand's mechanoreceptors may resolve only limited detail. Published research on golfers' perception of putting impact indicates sound is one important contributor to perceived feel. Strike location, face texture, head geometry, material — they can plausibly leave fingerprints in the acoustic signature, which is part of what we intend to test.
Design implication
Sound is one contributor to perceived feel, and we treat it as a design variable — one we intend to measure, target, and verify, not one we've already tuned. That's the working hypothesis behind the acoustics program:
- Measure, don't describe. Every 001 prototype is intended to have its acoustic signature captured with calibrated instrumentation — spectrum, loudness, decay — for center and off-center strikes.
- Tune with geometry. Wall thicknesses, cavity shapes, face milling, and alloy selection all appear to shift the signature. Those are the knobs available; the plan is to turn them until the numbers land where we're aiming.
- Keep the sound informative. The goal isn't the "softest" or "loudest" putter. It's a head where a pure strike and a heel strike are meant to sound audibly different, so the feedback loop between player and putter stays intact.
That last point is a genuine design stance: sound that's tuned to flatter every strike stops being useful feedback. The design goal is for an OURO head to be an instrument in both senses — precisely made, and designed to reflect the strike rather than flatter it. Whether a given prototype meets that goal is something we intend to verify with measurement, not assert in advance.
Where this goes
Acoustic capture starts when the first 001 billets come off the machine. The measured signatures — and how they shift as we iterate — will be published here and in the testing section of the 001 page. When we eventually say a production head "sounds like a center strike," there will be a spectrum plot behind the sentence.
