Why OURO exists
OURO began in a graduate engineering lab, with a question that wouldn't go away: how much of what a putter promises — alignment, feel — could actually be measured, and how much was asserted?
Alignment features are often chosen because they look right at address. "Feel" gets described in adjectives that mean something different to every player. We wanted to know what the published research already said about both, and whether it was making its way into how putters get designed.
The research has been sitting in journals for two decades. Published aim studies suggest that misaim of a degree or more at address is common — context for the problem, not a result of ours. Impact sound and post-impact vibration are believed to be major contributors to perceived feel, and the ear reads impact in a band that can be measured with a microphone. We started OURO to build a putter the way that research points, and to publish the method alongside the results.
So the premise of OURO is uncomfortable in its simplicity: treat perception like an engineering domain. Aim as a tolerance. Feel as a frequency. Alignment features are hypotheses until a study says otherwise.
The company runs as a closed loop — design from the literature, prototype on the machine, test on players, learn from the data, begin again. Our mark is a circle that studies itself, with a deliberate opening at the top, because a closed circle is finished and ours never is.
Prototype 001 is in that loop now. This journal is where we'll document the work: study designs, machining decisions, measurements, and the failures — because a loop that hides its failures isn't learning from them.
If we can't measure it, we won't claim it. If we make a performance claim, it must trace to a measurement. Hold us to that.
